Tolerance for Ambiguity

« Back to Glossary Index

Tolerance for ambiguity can be defined as the degree to which an individual is comfortable with lack of clarity in verbal or nonverbal communication, e.g., not being sure of the precise meaning of an expression in a language. In essence, tolerance for ambiguity is manifest in a person’s ability to operate effectively in a communication situation despite not fully understanding the meaning of language or customs in a new culture.
