Tense Shifting

« Back to Glossary Index

In English grammar, tense shift refers to the change from one verb tense to another (usually from past to present, or vice versa) within a sentence or paragraph. Switching verb tenses in this manner can sometimes cause confusion for the listener or reader. However, sometimes a shift in tense is necessary to indicate a change in the timeframe of the action.
