Hierarchical Orientations

« Back to Glossary Index

In intercultural studies, the term orientation is used to describe a tendency or preference of an individual or group. A hierarchical orientation is a cultural perspective that expects a greater level of formality and distance between those with more power and those with less power within an organization. In contrast, flat organizations tend to be more informal and participatory, with less distance between levels of power.
