Tone is most often associated with vocal variations that convey different moods or meanings. In this case, it can be an attitude or feeling communicated through the sound of the voice, beyond the words themselves. From a linguistic perspective, tone can also be present in written communication. In this case, it is conveyed through syntax, word choice and level of formality, and it reflects the writer’s sense of audience and the atmosphere or ambience of the message, which may, for example, be upbeat, persuasive or business-like.
