Active Listening

« Back to Glossary Index

Active listening is a technique used to improve mutual understanding when communicating with others. Approaches include focusing one’s attention on the speaker, withholding judgement and reflecting on the information received. Active listeners also clarify messages by repeating, paraphrasing and summarizing the points made by the speaker to ensure comprehension. Allowing sufficient time for speakers to make their points and observing nonverbal behaviour are other active listening strategies.
